The Black Scholars and Professionals (BSAP) Ministry of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is conducting its 2nd annual conference. All alumni and friends - blessed through the ministries of Dr. Alice Brown-Collins - which includes over eighteen years of service with African American Campus Ministries Coalition (AACMC) and other InterVarsity ministries - are invited to attend.

Join us for reunion and revival at this fundraiser celebrating new opportunities for transformation, renewal, and service.

Parking is available on a first come, first serve basis.  There is an Oxford Street entrance parking lot and also Mellen Street parking lot.  For the weekend, you do not need permits.  This begins at 5 p.m. on Friday and all day Saturday without a permit.  If you park on Massachusetts Avenue, you will need to pay the meters.
 
In addition, there is the red line T (subway) and the bus.  Complete information on bus, subway, and commuter rail schedules is available on the MBTA web site.

Speaker Biographies 

Keynote Speaker


Lisa Sharon Harper is a graduate of the USC School of Theatre’s MFA Playwriting. Her thesis play, An’ Push da Wind Down, won the 1996 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival “Michael Kanin National Student Playwriting Award and is published through Samuel French, Inc. She also earned her Master’s Degree in Human Rights, with a concentration in Religion & Media, from Columbia University in New York City.

Ms. Harper is Co-founder and Executive Director, NY Faith & Justice, President of National Faith & Justice Network and author of Evangelical Does Not Equal Republican…Or Democrat (The New Press). Her latest book, Left, Right & Christ: Evangelical Faith in Politics was co-written with evangelical Republican, Dr. David Inns. Forthcoming October 2011.

Ms. Harper’s work and her Shalom Talk Series has been a catalyst for ethnic reconciliation and systemic justice across the country. She also serves as the co-chair of the New York State Interfaith Network for Immigration Reform.

Conference Workshops:

Working with Vision: Faith in the Workplace

In this workshop three professionals will share how they use their various jobs to exercise their faith.  The panel will discuss biblical bases for how they approach their work and how they see it manifesting God’s commands for our work here on the earth.  As part of the workshop, the attendees will develop a vision for themselves and their own work.  Everyone will develop their own faith/vision statement for their job that they will take back to their workplace/school and use to remind themselves where God is in their career walk. (Jesus & Joy)

Submission and Success: Finding and Following your Calling

In this workshop facilitators will use sharing, instruction, and prayer to help participants get closer to their academic and professional callings.  Facilitators will tell their stories of hearing from God and finding their God-ordained careers, and will advise and pray for participants’ in the workshop itself.  Half the workshop will be organized in a large group where everyone can hear the various testimonies from the facilitators, and then the group will split into smaller groups so that the facilitators can counsel and pray for participants more individually.  All participants will leave with a plan for working toward hearing from God on their career path. (Jesus and Justice)

Finders, Keepers: What You Can and Cannot Work With in Relationships

In this workshop a long-married couple and a recently married couple will share their experiences with getting to know each other in the dating and courtship process.  They will give specific attention to talking about what kinds of things are negotiable and non-negotiable for Black Christians seeking life partners.  For the first portion of the workshop the couples will give their testimonials, including attention to how they set proper boundaries while they figured out whether their person of interest met their critical criteria.  Then, for a time males will split off with other males and the females will split off with the other females to talk about gender-specific issues. In the final segment they will come together to talk about how we can understand and accommodate each other’s needs in this fashion.  Emphasis will be given to biblical conceptions of relationships. (Joy & Jesus)

Commissioned in our Scholarly and Professional Worlds

In this workshop facilitators will give specific instructions on how to evangelize people in professional and graduate school contexts. For the first portion of the workshop the facilitators will explain the principles of evangelism, missional work, and witnessing, and will share their processes for evangelizing.  Then, after a question and answer session, participants will role-play evangelism situations and get feedback from their brothers and sisters.  In the end participants will gain specific strategies around evangelism and will also perhaps have gotten some actual practice. (Jesus)

1.     Can I come to the conference without registering?

No.  All conference participants MUST register.  The best thing to do is to register online at: http://national.bsapministries.org/conferences/bsap-2011-conference

On this site, you can register, pay your fee, and select your workshop choices all at once.  The priority deadline for registration is April 28th.  The fee for registrations submitted on or before this date is $60.  For registrations submitted after the 28th, the fee is $75. Onsite registrations will be accepted, however those registrants will be charged the late fee of $75

2.     When should participants arrive on Friday, April 29, 2011?

For those travelling by air or by train, please plan to arrive no earlier than 1PM and no later than 3PM EST.  Participants should look on hotwire.com or hotels.com to find discounted lodging rates.

3.     When should participants depart on Saturday, April 30th, 2011?

Once again, for those planning to travel by air or by train, please do not book a flight prior to 7PM. 

4.      What are my transportation options during the conference?

For this year’s conference, we will be relying on public transportation.  Routes, fares, and scheduling can be found at: mbta.com You are also free to rent a car at your own expense, if you so desire. 

5.     When and where will I eat?

The conference registration cost includes light refreshments on Friday evening, continental breakfast on Saturday morning, and a full lunch Saturday afternoon. Cambridge has a wide variety of restaurants for your eating pleasure.  You should feel free to take advantage of any of these.  A Link to local restaurants:

6.     How do I get to University Hall?

Subway:

Complete information on bus, subway, and commuter rail schedules is available on the MBTA web site.

  • Take the MBTA Red Line or Commuter Rail Fitchburg Line to the Porter Square stop.
  • Exit the station on the left and turn left onto Massachusetts Avenue. University Hall is be one-half block down on your left at 1815 Massachusetts Avenue. Student Services is located on the third floor.

Car:

Parking at and near Lesley University is very limited. We encourage visitors and students to use public transportation if possible. If you will be driving, please allow extra time for parking.

Driving From the North or South:

  • Follow Interstate 93 to Exit 26 - Storrow Drive.
  • Follow Storrow Drive West to the Harvard Square Exit.
  • Turn right at the end of the offramp.
  • Cross the Charles River and continue straight onto John F. Kennedy Street.
  • Continue into Harvard Square.
  • Follow directions from Harvard Square (below).

Driving From the West:

  • Take Interstate 90 East (Massachusetts Turnpike) to Exit 18 - Allston/Cambridge. The exit will be on the left.
  • After the toll booth, bear right on the exit ramp. Follow the signs for Boston, Cambridge, Somerville.
  • Proceed straight onto the bridge, crossing the Charles River. Immediately at the end of the bridge, turn left onto Memorial Drive.
  • Follow Memorial Drive for approximately 1/2 mile.
  • At the third light turn right onto John F. Kennedy Street.
  • Continue straight into Harvard Square.
  • Follow the directions from Harvard Square (below).

Driving From Harvard Square:

  • Proceed straight through Harvard Square.
  • When the road forks, bear left onto Massachusetts Avenue (2A West). Move to the right lane.
  • Proceed north and turn right onto Mellen Street to reach the Quad Campus.
  • To reach University Hall (1815 Massachusetts Avenue), continue approximately seven blocks. The building will be on your right.
